Genshin Impact Surpasses $4 Billion in Mobile Revenue as miHoYo Expands Its Global Influence

On March 10, data from the Sensor Tower Store Intelligence platform showed that “Genshin Impact” saw another increase in overseas income, reclaiming the top spot on the out-of-country mobile game revenue list and re-entering the top of the revenue growth list. Meanwhile, another game developed by miHoYo, “Blade and Blossom 3,” saw a 62% increase in overseas income month-over-month, returning to the top 14 of the revenue list and topping the growth list at third place.
According to reports, the hosting of the “Honey Walnut” and “Night Lan” character activities in early February and the 3.5 version update in late February contributed significantly to “Genshin Impact’s” overseas revenue growth. The recent re-release of the “Honey Walnut” character’s pool, which had been absent for 451 days, is a testament to the strong combat power of the other character, “Night Lan,” affectionately dubbed the “Night Empress” by players.
The high-demand characters in “Genshin Impact,” such as “Honey Walnut,” were last re-released on November 3, 2021, causing server issues for miHoYo. This prolonged re-release underscores the company’s remarkable revenue-generating capabilities.
According to reports from Hongxing News, mobile application data analysis platform Sensor Tower showed that since its launch in September 2020, “Genshin Impact” has earned over $4 billion through mobile devices, with approximately $1.64 billion in revenue in the first eleven months of 2022. However, this figure only represents the mobile revenue, not including PC or console versions.
In recent years, the revenue-generating prowess of the “Genshin Impact” IP under miHoYo has been repeatedly validated. On January 4, 2023, the hashtag “#Genshin Impact Revenue Exceeds $4 Billion” trended on Weibo. Additionally, a recent partnership between “Genshin Impact” and Pizza Hut led to a temporary outage of the Pizza Hut app, further highlighting the game’s substantial influence.
miHoYo has implemented various measures to prevent minors from becoming addicted to the game, including registration and payment processes. However, when parents request refunds for minors’ purchases, miHoYo often excuses these requests with various justifications, leading to consumer complaints.
On November 24, 2022, miHoYo’s Project SH project was announced to be suspended. Project SH, led by miHoYo’s founder and “Genshin Impact” producer, Cai Hao-yu, using the UE5 engine, is considered one of miHoYo’s most ambitious and largest development projects to date.
The development and progress of miHoYo’s flagship games, “Genshin Impact,” “Blade and Blossom 3,” and the in-development Project SH have been focal points in the gaming industry. However, the dissolution of Project SH may be within the company’s capacity to handle. Currently, miHoYo has already revealed “Blade and Blossom: Star Rail” and “Zero Escape.”
